I've been thinking a little more about this record, and actually, it's petty hard to sing badly and make it come across as genuine comedy -- take a look at the dozens of failed "bad singing" sketches of Saturday Night Live done over the years. Rube and his producers clearly knew he was not especially musically gifted (he wasn't much of an actor, either), but he certainly does a wonderful job as a comedian on this piece, if not a singer.
